I HATE PATSY CLINE
 
I remember mama sitting at the old oak kitchen table
that granddad had given her when I was seven years old.
 
Oh, how happy she was, with an electrifying intensity
of delight in her eyes. Tears rolled down her
ruby flushed cheeks.
 
And out of the blue,
with an outlandish gestured
sweep of her arms,
she whisks out this bland old oilcloth
with a printed botany of green artichokes,
pearlier onions, and yellow orange carrots
and…
 
Thereafter, we never again saw the beautiful
golden grains
that striated the length of the tabletop.
 
She claimed it was for protection –
hummm.
 
She would sit for hours,
hands folded as if she were
praying to God above,
with a lukewarm cup
of yellow chamomile tea
and two burnt pieces of toast
spread with raspberry jam.
 
Patsy’s music assaulted the air,
the rooms, everywhere with
melodies of,
love just smitten,
love gone wrong,
and a broken heart
that needed mending.
 
Even the dog in the doghouse
across the yard
would give an occasional howl to the tunes.
 
Sometimes it was almost impossible
to do my homework,
and the music so grated on my nerves…
I had this capricious notion to
abort and head right out the door.
I hated Patsy Cline.
 
This was mama’s daily ritual,
around six o’clock,
put on the vinyl records and 
listen to Patsy wail 
waiting for dad to come home.
 
When he did arrive home,
mama, on the brink of tears
would hug him so hard 
glad that he had returned.
 
It was downright depressing,
and that is why I hated
Patsy Cline.
 
At seven years old,
I blamed Patsy for all of mama’s tears,
not really understanding
why mama really cried.
 
I though those sad, sad stories
that Patsy sang about,
was what made mama cry.
 
Later in my adult years
I knew why mama cried
those tears to Patsy Cline’s music-
for I now cry those same tears.
 
Instead of chamomile tea,
It’s beer
instead of toast and raspberry jam,
it’s remorse and sadness
and
Patsy Cline’s music
still
continues to assault
every room in my house.
 
And I still hate Patsy Cline.

Yellow, lukewarm afternoon sun
beams its penetrating rays
day after day
week after week

clothes colored navy and blue
afloat and hang freely,
from clothespins on a tight, taunt line
bobbin in a summer’s dance of clean.

Prior to this dance of clean
purposeful hands
plunge
into a warmish basin
of soapy bubbles
and suds,
knuckles red,
and bleed from duty.

She,
clannish old hag,
mother of labored love
now mean,
curt and hateful
carries the basket
of laundry
and toil.

She,
Just a woman,
peeks through the sunspot paines
and dreams of a different day,
when she was young
and possibilities
lied behind the garden gate.

She,
A great Duchess,
A Baroness,
A Queen,
denounces her insignificant role,
mother of labored love.

There is bloodshed in the Congo
as the ruthless poachers
set their traps
to the agony of the jungle lair.

MY FATHER AND I

When I think back about my father,
the shadowy image in my mind’s eye
is always clouded and contorted.

His platinum hair and mustache
with a persona of an archangel,
here to guide me to conservatism,
beyond this earthly plane.

He frightened me with his
Edwardian morals
moreover, I deplored his ideologies
and who he was,
and yet,
I saw him as a demigod
to be emulated.

I tried many times to be the man
he wanted me to be…
attempting to walk in his oversized shoes.
Only I couldn’t - knowing that
somehow, I would loose myself.

At an early age I gravitated towards
the path less trodden.

He, being genteel yet brave,
egocentric and verbose,
a traditionalist and conformist,
walked the path of the sages.

He taught me the rudiments of his trade
with an accent of a language past.
A pontificating scholar of the academy.

And expecting me to be the same.
The only problem – was me.

My mind had wings and soared
to imaginable heights,
to horizons, he had never dared dream.

This was the twentieth century,
the world and “I “ were in a metamorphosis
of change.
Why, I was the world at that time!

I was forever inquisitive
and strove in arduous attempts,
sometimes foolhardy,
to avoid the conformal societal conventions
of his preaching’s.

Which only displeased and
drove him to despair.

My incandescent wit
to outsmart my father
would invariably end
in vicissitudes of his wrath.

Minor arguments would become
tantamount warfare,
he usually the victor.

As I recap on the episodes
of my early years,
I can see my ideologies coalesces
with his.

I believe, a part of my soul,
that of the revolutionist, is lost,
buried somewhere in my psyche,
to be retrieved later.

For I feel, that I am now,
very similar to my father.

A centurion fighting for conservatism;
with relic ideologies of the past.

of the brutal act that she imagines will set her mind free,
and relinquish all her self-imposed guilt.

SCENE 2

Deanne, nervously biting the quick of her nails,
cigarette after cigarette, her whole being anxious.

Her mind in a state of unbearable anxiety, hands shakily
reach for the cup of strong dark coffee.

She ponders, how much can I get from granddame’s
silver tea set and her beautiful heirloom emerald broach?

I can’t sell them, but I have to get some money.
Her hands clammy and wet, brush over her ruffled
dark brown hair.

Tears begin to roll down her face. If only I didn’t have
this habit. This addiction to the opium and the cannabis
is doing very little to take off the edge.

Oh Fuck It!

SCENE 3

The millionaire Carlson, now on the bandwagon, his latest
philosophy; never a drop of wine shall caress these lips.

So as an abstraction from his addiction he cavorts
and is in cahoots with this foolhardy chap from Belgium.
Who is verbose about his powder puff indiscretions
with the same sex and his affinity for masochistic and
sadistic pleasures.

He feels his emotions and decisions have run amok,
and there’ll be a premium he’ll have to pay,
and not with his money.

SCENE 4

Anita and Donovan had a fearsome argument while staying
at the Astoria Hotel. Each biting piece of dialogue filled
with bitter contempt, stabbing at each other’s heart.

Anita to the point of tears, while Donovan brooded
over his beer with nothing more to say.

No fault lay upon his chest, only comments made in jest.

Anita will make him pay the price, for his eyes taking
in the sights of the beauteous, Aphroditic author
with a very lush bosom, in the lobby of the Astoria.

Dam, dam, dam, will she ever let this end?

SCENE 5

Wilhelmina, with her righteous probity, queries into the
psychoanalytic realms of her mind and heart.

Guilt lay behind every shadowed corner of her psyche
over the tryst with this married man from Vancouver.

Her liaisons with married men have been great and many
and had never bothered or troubled her before, but now
to defrock the tapestry of mental complexities has made
her soul unrest

No heroine with laudatory laurels, had she been to the
many men whose pleasures she had obliged,
that of course their wives had forsaken for the children,
the house and the headaches.

She chuckled to herself as tears releasable poured
from orbs of remorse.

She the dramatist, had she not portrayed the damsel in distress
that had lured the men into her web?

Why should her heart ponder over ethics and morality now?

SCENE 6

Fernando, from Argentina, seventeen years of age,
prostitution as his trade, exchanging favors for coins of gold,
he feels he’s cleaver but yet he knows, the very lovers have
exploited him in every way. They the ones who chose to pay.

His bedazzling smile of sunshine behind the façade of
insuppressible rage, with agony smoldering beneath the veneers
of that very smile.

Some day, just some day, this inhumane contamination of my soul
will cease its monotonous game of exchangeable merchandise.

SCENE 7

Penelope renders herself helpless every time she slashes at her
physical arm, mind disconnected from her psyche under the premise
of punishment. She feels her mother would approve.

She, at that very moment, becomes the spectator not the participant.
The impenetrable discomfort gives her the sensation of feeling alive.
No blatant tears of empathy for self will be allowed.

Right become wrong, and wrong becomes right.

SCENE 8

The office of Doctor Thomas Judson, M.D.
A preeminent theorist, on group psychotherapy and cognitive therapy.
A small cozy room with Aztec collectibles, and artifacts that hang
on the walls and overcrowd the bookshelves.

The drapes usually closed, alluding to a protected and intimate
environment.

The eight people with unique and individual personalities have
been carefully chosen by Doctor Judson, for this Psychotherapy
Group for they all share a commonality of similitude.

That they, amongst themselves, with the input of each other, and
Doctor Judson, will possibly unravel the complexity of their
complex minds.

SEANCE ON AN IMAGINARY NIGHT

I can still remember the accident in 1972.

On a wet and rainy afternoon
The streets were wet and slick
As my nephew, Rutger's luxury automobile
Dovetailed into a Toyota
on Balboa and Marina Drive,
At the pinnacle of his life.

His dear wife, Czarina
Held a seance that very night.

The lights in the chandelier were dimmed
The room was dark as could be.

A single candle with flames ablaze
Alit in front of us three.

She queried to her contact,
Just a message to my dear husband, Rue.

When all of a sudden the china teapot
Flew across the room
Creating a ghastly, ghostly sound
Pandemonium was everywhere
As the dishes began to spin and twirl
Right above our heads.

An eerie light shone on the wall
Revealing a relic tapestry
Bereft of several threads
Our eyes glued to that very spot
With bedazzlement and dread.

For now a ghostlike shadow
Played upon the woven cloth
Exuding and iridescent mucus
The desecrater of the cross.

The room was as cold the winters ice
exhalations of our breath could be seen.
And a terrible aromatic stench
with an essence of decay
expelled into the darkened room.

When all of a sudden, Czarina collapsed
And the devil was by my side.

My face became white and pasty
And I shivered from my head to my toes.
I summoned all of my courage
And commanded the phantom to go.

Just at that very moment,
My heart beating very fast
Czarina elevated upward
In mid-air she hung,
quite aghast.

As discordant musical chanting
And the triumphal strings of a harp
Permeated at our senses
and piercing at our hearts.

And all of a sudden she vanished
With a wild and mournful cry.

And there in her chair lay a crucifix
And the archangel was by our sides.

I could hear Rutgers voice from a distance
Echoing through a cloudy haze,
Czarina, you are now by my side.

And drifting down from the ceiling
A postcard from the Nile
beaming with rays of sunshine,
Czarina saying goodbye.

Your Rugalachs better than all of the rest.

Oy vey, what can I say?

He’s my hubby for fifty years
I fling the flowerpot
He drinks the beer
He is kosher, and I am not

A wholehearted Golem
And as troublesome as can be

We both do agree.

She is our Don Quixote
pursuing the imaginable dream.

She shows us the ways of the warrior Indian
walking with footsteps of silence
through the forest
senses heightened
lest any adversary be present.

She depicts Isadora’s boldness
in dancing spirit
with the synchrony of her soul
in radical defiance
of “Things As They Are”.

She represents the gypsy spirit
with tambourine in hand
clamoring in song and dance
to entice, to allure
to set us free of our inhibitions.

She is the adventurer
The revolutionist
The poet

She is anonymous,
she is the voice of you
and the voice of me

With speech nonsensical and dry
She is the essence of the imagination
The inspiration of our souls
